Pelican Ice is the oldest continuously operating ice company in North America. Today, it operates a 340 ton per day plant in Kenner, LA, a 100 ton per day plant in Gulfport, MS, a distributorship in Mobile, AL, and a large ice storage facility in York, AL. Around the turn of the century Pelican was a block ice plant and cold storage facility. It was located at 1550 St. Louis St. on the outskirts of the French Quarter in New Orleans LA. It relocated in 1958 to Howard Avenue in the Central Business District. Then in December 1989, on the reputed coldest day of the century in New Orleans, the Howard Avenue plant caught fire and burned for a week. All that remained was employees, delivery trucks, merchandisers, and two-way radios.The company, however, continued to deliver ice to its customers, missing only one day of service
